The Redding Riptide, a 14U B division girls softball ASA team captured third place in their first tournament of the season over the weekend (6-13/14)in Vallejo. The 10th Joshua Richardson Memorial Tournament featured top teams from the San Francisco Bay Area. The Riptide, traveling from Redding, came out swinging the first day, scoring a big victory in the first match of the weekend. Subsequent games featured close games, with the Riptide securing a place in the playoffs on Sunday. An early 8AM game saw the Riptide defeat the tournament hosts, the Vallejo Hurricanes 7-5. Kelsey Hermann (LF) smashed a two run triple and caught the game winning fly ball deep in left to end the contest. Maddie Novelli was the winning pitcher for the Riptide, scattering 7 strike outs over 4 1/2 innings. The Riptide faced one of the Bay Area's top teams in the semi finals, the Benicia Fastpitch Outlaws. A very close contest, Hermann blasted another huge triple, with key double plays and plays at the plate keeping the match close between the Redding team and Benicia. Benicia ended up winning the contest 7-0, ending the day for the Riptide. "We are very proud of all of our players, this was a prestigious tournament featuring top teams headed to the Nor Cal Championships in two weeks. We look forward to meeting them again" said Manager Mike Ursitti. Redding Riptide coach Skip Donovan stated "The local girls team held their own in many challenging positions this weekend, we are excited about the remainder of the season".
